There is nothing better than spending the day at a day spa being pampered. Salt scrubs, massages, facials . . . the list of goes on and on. But if a day at the spa isn’t exactly in your budget, don’t worry. Planning a DIY spa day is easy and so much fun!
An at-home spa day might seem like it would take a lot of planning and work. But pampering yourself in the comfort of your own home couldn’t be easier and more inexpensive. Why pay hundreds of dollars when you can get the same luxurious DIY spa experience at home?
What do you love most about going to the spa? Is it the low lighting? The soft music? The fluffy towels? Yes, yes and yes! Day spas are well known for creating an atmosphere of relaxation and you can achieve that same atmosphere at home during your DIY spa day. Here are a few things to have on hand:
Nice towels – Invest in some soft, thick towels you can use during your at-home spa day. You don’t have to spend a lot to get some nice towels that will leave you feeling totally pampered.
Bathrobe – Skip the yoga pants and instead, opt for a nice soft bathrobe. You’ll be able to totally relax and enjoy your DIY spa without worrying about getting your clothes dirty.
Add something green – Bring a vase full of flowers or a nice green plant into your DIY spa. They are nice to look at and can help you connect with nature.
Create a relaxing playlist – Set your phone to do not disturb and put on your most relaxing playlist. It will help you feel better and set the perfect DIY spa feel.
Cucumber and fruit water – Add a glass pitcher filled with ice cold water, cucumber slices and your favorite fruit and some pretty glasses to your DIY spa day. Sit back and relax while sipping your favorite fruity water. Don’t forget to add a splash of Omega-7 Blend to make it even healthier.
Exfoliation is a great way to rejuvenate your body from head to toe and an essential part of any DIY spa day. Using simple ingredients at home like oatmeal, coconut oil, coffee grounds, sugar, and essential oils, you can great a great smelling, exfoliating scrub that will leave your skin looking and feeling like a million bucks. Here are a few of our favorites for your own DIY spa day:
Coffee Scrub – Mix 1 cup of used coffee grounds with 1 cup of sugar, ½ cup of melted coconut oil and a few drops of Sea Berry Seed Oil until they are combined. Store in a glass jar with a lid. Keep it by the shower and use it to make every day feel like an at-home spa day.
Brown Sugar Scrub – Mix 1 cup of brown sugar with 1 cup of raw oatmeal, 1 cup of olive oil, and a few drops of SIBU Luxe Oil until combined. Apply the mixture and rub in slow circles all over your skin while standing over a towel. Once you scrub of the majority of the scrub, jump in the shower and rinse the rest off. Try to get as much off your skin before you shower so you don’t clog up the pipes with the oatmeal.
Hydration for Your Skin
When your skin is feeling dry, a DIY spa day can be just the ticket. After exfoliating your skin, be sure to apply some deep moisturizing products like the SIBU Miracle Stick, the Moisturizing Body Cream, or your own body butter, whipped up with this easy recipe:
Melt equal parts of shea butter and coconut oil in the top of a double boiler. Remove from heat and let cool for 30 minutes until it starts to set up slightly. Add a few drops of your favorite essential oils (we love adding Sea Buckthorn Fruit or Seed Oil) and whip the mix until it thickens to a butter consistency. Store in an airtight jar and apply as often as needed.
Creating your own spa treatments is not only financially smart but it’s better for your skin as well. Feel free to experiment with these recipes and switch things up until you get it the way you like it.
Free of chemicals and preservatives, DIY spa products can help you feel pampered without the hefty price tag. SIBU has a wide variety of amazing products for your whole body, including sea buckthorn, that will make your DIY spa day a regular occurrence.
When you are striving to lead the healthiest life possible, a list of superfoods should be at your fingertips at all times. Filling your fridge and pantry with these delicious superfoods can help you with a variety of dietary goals and needs.
Explore the world of superfoods with us! What is a superfood? How can superfruits benefit me? How can I use superfoods in my daily cooking? We will answer these questions and more while we provide you with a superfoods list for 2018 to start you on your journey of experimenting with the exotic.
What are Superfoods and Superfruits?
Superfoods and superfruits are defined by their low-calorie, high-nutrient, high-fiber properties. Not all fruits and vegetables are created equal, and not all which are claimed to be superfoods truly are. When choosing your superfoods, you want to pay close attention to those that are high in antioxidants to help fight free radicals in your system. The other very important components that your superfruits and superfoods should have are the essential fatty acids, like omega-3, -6, -9, and the extremely critical and difficult-to-obtain omega-7.
Superfoods and Superfruits Trending in 2018
The irony of creating a list of newly trending superfoods is that none of the superfoods are actually new. As a matter of fact, this list of superfoods is comprised of ancient root vegetables, fruits, and even a fungus in the form of the chaga mushroom. The sea buckthorn berry is one of the most powerful superfruits, and its use dates back to the time of Genghis Khan who used this mighty fruit to power his army of men and horses. Below are listed some of the most advantageous superfoods along with recipes and tips on how to use them.
1. Chaga Mushrooms
This fungal addition to the 2018 superfoods list is found on birch trees in the colder climates of the Northern Hemisphere including Russia, Canada, and the northern United States. Its use dates back to the indigenous people of Siberia in the 12th century.
The Chaga mushroom is often overlooked as a knot or burn on the bark of the tree. Once harvested, dried, and ground, chaga mushrooms are most often consumed as a tea. Try this recipe for a delicious chocolate chaga smoothie:
Chocolate Chaga Superfood Smoothie:
1 cup cold chaga tea
1/2 frozen banana, sliced
1 cup frozen berries
1 tablespoon cocoa powder
Pinch of cinnamon (optional, but cinnamon also has wonderful anti-inflammatory properties)
Combine ingredients in a blender and blend until smooth. Add more cold chaga tea to achieve desired thickness.
Chaga is a superfood that can boost your immune system, help control blood pressure, and improve your gastrointestinal health. It is also believed to have cancer-fighting components.
2. Tiger Nuts
While the resemblance is uncanny, this superfood is definitely not harvested from tigers. In another odd twist, tiger nuts are not nuts at all. They are a root vegetable that is cultivated in Spain and West Africa, dating back to ancient Egypt. If you suffer from digestive ailments like upset stomach, irritable bowel syndrome, or even excessive gas, eating tiger nuts can help. It is also said to help remedy erectile dysfunction, though there is no medical proof of this.
Tiger nuts can be eaten whole, but are usually consumed as a flour. Incorporating another of the superfoods on our 2018 list, cassava, the superfood ingredients in these brownies will not give you superpowers, but they may make you feel like a superhero.
Tiger Nut Cassava Brownies
1/2 cup unsweetened applesauce
1/3 cup pure maple syrup
2 tablespoons organic palm oil shortening
1 tablespoon natural vanilla extract
2/3 cup tiger nut flour
1/2 cup cassava flour
4 tablespoons carob powder
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
Preheat oven to 350 degrees and grease an 8 x 8-inch pan with palm shortening.
Mix together applesauce, maple syrup, palm oil shortening, and vanilla extract.
Add the tiger nut flour, cassava flour, carob powder, and baking powder; mix well.
Spread evenly in prepared pan and then bake for 20-25 minutes.
Let cool slightly on a cooling rack, but slice before completely cooled.
Carambola is another one of the excellent examples of superfruits. More commonly known as “starfruit,” this juicy pentagonal delight is high in vitamin C and loaded with antioxidants. The carambola has important enzymes such as the B-vitamins that can help to boost your metabolism.
The beauty of the carambola, other than it’s physical star shape, is that a medium-sized (about 3 inches long) delicious pear-pineapple-apple-tasting starfruit is only 30 calories and very low in sugar.
Carambola can be eaten raw right from the tree. They also make an excellent juice, and the pulp can be used to make jam or baked into cakes or muffins.
NOTE: Consumption of carambola can create a harmful toxin in those suffering from kidney disease.
Cassava must be included on the superfoods list for 2018. This root vegetable has been a staple for cultures dating back to the Taino Indians of the Caribbean. On islands like Puerto Rico, it is still a mainstay and one of the principal crops grown and consumed on the island.
You may also know cassava as tapioca, yuca, or manioc. It is roasted, boiled, mashed, and used frequently in soups and stews. It is also the principal ingredient in the masa or dough used for alcapurrias, but consumption of these fried delights probably does not fit into a healthy way of eating. The Taino used cassava flour for bread and as a thickener, and this flour is now available in grocery stores across Puerto Rico.
Cassava can be used to reduce inflammation which in turn helps to relieve arthritis. Seemingly contradictory as a starchy root vegetable, cassava has also been used to control diabetes. It is effective in treating digestive issues, and can even improve cardiovascular health.
This strange-looking fruit has long been used in the tropical climes of the Caribbean as a superfruit. Do not let its green spiny skin scare you away. The milky white creamy flesh of the guanabana, also known as soursop, is low in calorie and high in fiber, so it is great for weight loss. It is also used to boost the immune system and reduce fever. It is an anti-inflammatory and its bacteria-fighting properties help prevent urinary tract infections (UTIs).
Guanabana is high in tryptophan, an amino acid essential to humans that has calming properties, so enjoying the coconut-kiwi-pineapple flavor of the flesh of this superfruit can help control anxiety and mellow your mood.
Perhaps the greatest attribute of guanabana, and why it should be included on the 2018 super fruits list, is its cancer-fighting bioelements. Research is still being conducted, so at this time there is no solid medical evidence that the fruit can fight cancer, but many people who have used it for this reason are convinced that the consumption of guanabana kept the cancer at bay.
6. Sea Buckthorn Berry
Probably the “super-est” of superfoods on the superfoods list for 2018 is the sea buckthorn berry. This amazing fruit takes the resiliency it uses to grow in the harsh climes of the Himalayan mountains and shares that resiliency with consumers through its over 190 bionutrients. The sea buckthorn berry is an amazing superfruit because nearly every part of the plant can be used: the berry, its seeds, the leaves, and even the bark.
The multitudinous health benefits of the sea buckthorn berry make it the wellness champion of the 2018 superfoods list. It aids in digestion, lowers cholesterol, and improves cellular and cardiovascular health.
Just as the tiger nut is not a nut, the sea buckthorn berry is technically not a berry. This berry-like fruit on the superfruits list is optimal when harvested by hand in the early morning hours before the sun comes up. SIBU employs women from local villages to pick the best sea buckthorn berries at peak ripeness, and then they are processed within 24 hours to create incredible products for healthy skin and supplements for improved health and gorgeous shiny hair.
For a supercharged superfruit smoothie, try this blender recipe…
Sea Buckthorn Berry Blended Breakfast
1/2 cup sea buckthorn berries, frozen or fresh
1 medium carambola, whole or trimmed with seeds removed (though the seeds add nutrients and a nice crunch)
Combine ingredients in a blender and blend until smooth. Add SIBU Omega-7 Pure and ice as needed to reach desired consistency.
Where in the World Do I Get These Superfoods and Superfruits?
To quite literally answer this question, chaga mushrooms are found in the northern hemisphere; tiger nuts are from Africa and Spain; carambola, guanabana, and cassava are prevalent in the Caribbean; and the best sea buckthorn comes from the heights of the Himalayas. So how can you obtain them without putting a lot of stamps in your passport?
This is where the power and convenience of superfood supplements comes into play. For example, SIBU now has an amazing source of omega-7 in their new supplement Omega-7 Pure, made from 100% sea buckthorn berries. Absolutely nothing else is added—no other juices and not even any added water.
Just one (1-ounce) serving daily at 75 calories a pop will improve your hair and skin health and leave you feeling more energized and healthier overall. For even more impact, SIBU suggests up to four (1-ounce) servings per day.
Visit our website to learn more about the origin, history, and health benefits of the sea buckthorn berry, the emerging research about the importance of omega-7 fatty acids and the health benefits of SIBU Omega-7 Pure, and to check out our tremendous supplements and lovely topical lotions for the very best in skin and hair care.
If you are like most people and are eating processed foods, drinking sugary drinks, and consuming alcohol, then you know you are filling your body up with toxins. Unfortunately, even if you are practicing a healthy way of eating, sticking to lean meats and fresh fruits and vegetables, your body is still being exposed to toxins.
This passive poisoning happens all the time through soaps, shampoos, cleansers, and fuel emissions. Even plastic containers like your purified water bottle contain xenoestrogen and phytoestrogen that can leach into your water and create a hormonal imbalance. If your body is unable to rid itself of this waste, you get a toxin overload.
The great news is there are very simple and delicious homemade detox drinks that can fight toxin overload and bring your body into balance. Read on for tips on how to rid your body of toxins and create a clean slate for a healthier you.
Signs of Toxin Overload
Our bodies will naturally detoxify themselves. This is the reason that your body rids itself of waste in the morning, because whether you realize it or not, while you sleep you are fasting. A total fast is the only way to do a complete cleanse, and intermittent fasting is a recent trend, only eating during a 4-8 hour period each day, allowing the other 16-20 hours for the body to detoxify.
Using homemade detox drinks in conjunction with fasting enhances your body’s ability to rid itself of harmful waste, but how do you know if you need to detox? If you suffer from any of the following, you are probably on the verge of, or in, toxin overload:
Aches & pains
White pasty tongue
Weight loss resistance
Are you experiencing any of these symptoms? More than one? All of them? Then you are definitely overloaded with toxins and it is time to cleanse and renew with a delicious and refreshing homemade detox drink.
Fruits and Veggies
Enjoying homemade detox drinks does not mean you will be starving. Your natural detox drinks can include scrumptious treats like:
Beets (and throw those clean greens in too)
Fresh fruits and vegetables are always best, but frozen works well too and, of course, lasts longer in the freezer.
Fruit Detox Drink
8 oz freshly squeezed orange juice
4 oz coconut water (purified water is also fine)
½ cup strawberries
½ cup plain yogurt (leave out if you are trying to stay away from dairy)
½” slice of ginger root
1 tablespoon flaxseed oil
1 tablespoon freshly squeezed lime or lemon juice
Puree in blender and drink throughout the day. You can also add ice cubes to help keep it cold.
Veggie Detox Drink (Homemade V8™)
3 kale leaves
2 celery stalks
2 beets (include the greens)
1 turnip (include the greens)
½ bunch spinach
½ small head of cabbage
½ bunch parsley
½ small onion
2 cloves of garlic
Puree in a blender, adding water until desired consistency.
Berries are amazing superfoods and make incredible low-calorie homemade antioxidant drinks. Try mixing together:
Sea Buckthorn Berries
Berry ACV Detox Drink
1 cup blueberries
1 cup strawberries
½ cup blackberries
½ cup raspberries
2 tablespoons raw, unfiltered apple cider vinegar (with “the mother”)
Combine in blender and enjoy.
Natural Herbs, Spices, and Roots
You can benefit from the natural healing properties and boost the flavor of your homemade detox drink with natural ingredients like:
Dandelion (Improve your health and keep your lawn looking lovely by harvesting them yourself)
6 tablespoons dried dandelion root
12 tablespoons fresh dandelion leaves
4 cups boiling water
2 teaspoons crushed dried dandelion leaves
Steep to desired strength.
Oils made from the seeds of nature’s superfoods are power-packed additions to your natural detox drinks. Just a couple drops of these oils can ramp up the flavor and elevate health benefits:
Combine all in a blender and blend at high speed, adding ice until desired consistency and temperature.
Seeds and Nuts
In addition to being a great source of fiber, seeds and nuts will add a variety of health benefits, along with their nutty flavor, to your homemade detox drinks. Try using:
Coconut and Kiwi Homemade Detox Drink
2 cups fresh coco frio (cold coconut water from the nut)
2 peeled kiwi
Mint or ginger or both, to taste
Combine in a blender to a smoothie consistency. Add ice if desired.
Coconut water has many cleansing, healing properties, so it is also a wonderful alternative to purified water, particularly if you can get it fresh from the nut.
Homemade Detox Waters
Detox waters are delightfully refreshing and so easy to make. Using a glass jar or pitcher, just combine filtered water with light treats like cucumber and lemon or cucumber and watermelon. Make a berry homemade detox drink with frozen berries. Combine your favorites! Let it sit at least 2 hours, or best yet overnight for the most intense flavor.
Detox waters are an awesome way to cool down, boost energy, and give your body an extra push in ridding itself of harmful toxins.
The Benefits of Detoxification
Dr. Axe follows the philosophy that most illness comes from the gut and from inflammation, and he is an avid advocate of detoxifying the body of toxin overload through the use of natural detox drinks. In one of his many informative YouTube videos, Dr. Axe shares with us that in addition to reducing inflammation homemade detox drinks can:
Toxins are stored in our organs, so by cleansing them through fasting and homemade detox drinks, our organs will be healthier and work more efficiently. If you have digestive issues, it is probably because your gut lining, kidney, liver, and stomach are “gunked up.”
Think of detoxing your body like changing the oil on your car. If you do not put in fresh oil and change the filter, your car will not run as efficiently and it will eventually break down. The exact same thing happens to your body.
Remember that your skin is your largest bodily organ, so it too will benefit from a detoxification using natural detox drinks.
We used the car analogy to illustrate the physical benefits of homemade detox drinks, so let’s use a computer to describe the mental benefits. If you do not occasionally run a virus scan and debug your computer, it gets bogged down, starts running slower, and has memory issues. The exact same thing happens to your brain if you have a toxin overload.
After you have done a full detox and you feel like you are at the peak of health, incorporate the natural detox drinks into a permanent way of eating. Stay away from processed foods. If it comes in a box or a package, it is probably not the best thing for you to eat. Limit your dairy intake. Yes, it is delicious and a good source of calcium, but so are foods like seeds, almonds, kale, and broccoli, without the cholesterol-raising fats and added antibiotics and steroids.
Whenever possible, know where your fruits and vegetables are being harvested. Get to know your local farmers and buy from them, or visit a farmer’s market near you. Make sure you ask the farmer questions about how it’s grown and from where it came.
Joining a CSA, or Community Supported Agriculture, is a tremendous way to get quality fresh vegetables on a weekly basis and provides an opportunity to try something new without planting a whole garden of it.
Start every day with a home detox drink, and always have a pitcher of detox water available in the fridge. You can also make up bottles of your favorite detox water and put them in the freezer to take to work, on road trips, to the beach, or on those hot runs!
Sea Buckthorn Berry
Maximize the impact of any homemade detox drink with a few drops of sea buckthorn berry seed oil or fruit oil. Harvested in the Himalayas at an altitude of approximately 12,000 feet, this power-packed superfood has over 190 bionutrients that provide a tremendous number of health benefits, which:
Improve skin health
Produce shiny healthier hair
Relieve vaginal dryness
Balance cholesterol levels
Relieve dry eye
SIBU uses only 100% sea buckthorn berry seed oil and sea buckthorn berry fruit oil. You may find other companies that have lower prices, but most times they are using carrier oils and there is just a small percentage of sea buckthorn oil present.
If you are still unsure, you can purchase a small amount of our Sea Berry Seed Oil to try on your skin. Once you see its amazing results, you will want to buy our seed oil and fruit oil in bulk, and start using them in your homemade detox drinks or adding a couple drops to your favorite sunscreen to protect your skin.
So go make that homemade detox drink and take a few minutes to check out our website for more product information and testimonials.
Happy September beauty lovers…..I hope you all had a fulfilling summer and feel refreshed and ready for the new season. For summer 2018 I was the face of the holistic skincare brand SIBU…. as the model I also shared my experience with the products.
So today I’m giving you a detailed look into the three products that had the most impact on my skin. SIBU is in sync with how I live and approach beauty and so it was a joy to be the face of this nourishing skincare.
Let’s start on the inside….
My approach to beauty is from the inside out and so I have to tell you about the superpower Omega-7 Juice Blend. For glowing skin and lustrous hair this is what you need. Who is omega 7? Oh she’s the goddess of glow. A little history on the source of omega 7. The Turkestanica Sea Berry (sea buckthorn) is an omega 7 powerhouse unmatched in its nutrient profile. Packed with over 190 bioactive compounds. It thrives in the extreme alpine environment of the Himalayan Highlands. It is a fascinating berry and I encourage you to discover more through their blog.
So what are the specific benefits I hear you ask…. I experienced an obvious extra glow in my skin and noticeable improvement in my skin tone and texture, my hair shined, my immune system definitely felt stronger and this is a powerful free radical scavenger (get those free radicals!), and it’s great for your heart (whatever age, our heart deserves non stop support for all its work and love). I have a shot every morning and also one a few hours before bed. Perfect for now, when the body needs extra support as the seasons kiss and say goodbye.
Now that our inside is nourished and supporting our skin, let’s talk serum. This is the best serum I’ve ever used. I’m addicted. My skin tone has never looked better. It’s season-less , so after using it all summer, I will be using it throughout the autumn and winter. I use the Hydrating Face Serum in the morning and evening. As my regular beauty essentials lovers know, I’m all about layering my skincare, especially in the cooler months. I apply this on clean skin, patting it gently into my face and neck. I let it absorb for 30-60 seconds before applying the Luxe Face Oil.
This serum is a protective barrier not only against the elements (although it does not replace spf) but also against the pollution our skin has to endure daily in the city…..smooth, radiant, firm, glowing skin. Yes please!
Luxury skincare never felt so good. The Organic Luxe Face Oil is superior in its results. My skin drinks this up and as a thank you gives me a pop pow glow. Are you sitting down? You should be, as the guest list of oils is impressive:
Argan Oil – hydrating
Sunflower Oil – age and wrinkle protection provided by vitamin E
Rosehip Oil (one of my favorite oils) – vitamin A & C protect against toxins/oxidation
Lavender Oil – calming and clarifying for the complexion
Sea Buckthorn Oil (the queen) – super hydrating, antibacterial, antimicrobial. I use this morning and night!
This 1 fl oz bottle of pure luxe is my in flight companion and work colleague for on set if my skin needs a moisture boost. It is the ultimate in luxury skincare. Luxury is quality and quality are products that feed your skin with clean ingredients that nourish it. What you put on your body goes in your body.
So turn your glow all the way up…..more….more….more….yeah! Let’s glow together as we transition into the new season…..
